The Thirty-Nine Steps is John Buchan's lean 1915 thriller, the book that more or less invented the wrong-man-on-the-run chase story. Richard Hannay, bored stiff in London, takes in a frightened stranger with a tale of an assassination plot - and wakes to find the man murdered in his flat. With the police and a faceless ring both after him, Hannay flees north into the Scottish moors, living by his wits across ten taut chapters of disguises, narrow escapes, and a buried clue counted out in steps.
